Next Week's SEL Focus: Showing Empathy
We’re excited to begin Week 5 of our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) journey! It’s been a great start to the year, and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow together.
Our focus next week will be on being kind by showing empathy. Students will learn what it means to recognize and understand what others may be going through, and how to truly listen to understand.
We encourage you to take a moment to talk with your child about how they can show empathy at school—whether it’s offering a kind word, being a good listener, or supporting a classmate who’s having a tough day.
Together, we can help our students build a more compassionate and caring school community!
Week #11: SEL Focus – Being Kind by Helping and Supporting Others
Next week, our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) focus is being kind through helping and supporting others. We’ll be talking about how small acts of kindness—like offering help, encouraging a friend, or showing patience—can make a big difference.
Please take a moment to talk with your student about ways they can show kindness at school and at home. Encourage them to look for opportunities to compliment others, lend a hand, advocate for someone who needs support, and practice patience. Together, we can build a caring, supportive community where everyone feels seen and valued!

SEL Week #10: Being Safe and In Control
Next week in Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), our focus will be on being safe by staying in control of our bodies and objects. Students will learn to use materials appropriately, keep hands and feet to themselves, and walk safely in the classroom and hallways. These lessons help everyone feel comfortable and supported in our learning space.
Families are encouraged to continue the conversation at home! Ask your child how they can be safe at school, at home, and in the community.

October is Bullying Prevention Month
This month, we’re joining schools and communities across the country to raise awareness about bullying and promote kindness, inclusion, and respect. Throughout October, students will engage in activities and discussions focused on creating a safe, supportive environment for everyone. We encourage families to talk at home about the importance of standing up against bullying and being a friend to those who need support. Together, we can make a difference!

Last week, we focused on responsibility as part of our SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) program. Students practiced being responsible learners by coming to school prepared, asking and answering questions, staying organized, and setting and monitoring their goals. We’re proud of their efforts and growth!
We encourage you to talk with your child about what they learned last week. When students practice these skills at home as well as at school, it strengthens their understanding and helps them build lifelong habits.

This week in SEL, our focus will be on being respectful by celebrating the differences of others. Each class will be reading a book that highlights the importance of understanding and appreciating what makes us unique.
To help continue the conversation at home I’ve included a few questions in the attachment that you can discuss with your child. These are the same types of questions your student will be exploring during class this week:

As we enter Week 38, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus is responsibility through problem-solving. Students are learning to solve small problems independently, seek help when facing bigger challenges, and advocate for themselves.
This weekend, we encourage you to talk with your child about how they can be responsible by solving problems at school. Discuss ways they can handle conflicts with peers, ask for help from a teacher when needed, and take ownership of their actions in the classroom. These conversations help build confidence and important life skills.
Thank you for your support!
As we enter Week 37, our SEL focus is on being respectful by contributing to our school community. We are encouraging students to treat others the way they want to be treated, maintain a growth mindset, show consideration, collaborate with others, and be honest. These values help create a positive and supportive environment for everyone.
Ask your child how they can demonstrate respect in their daily interactions at school. What are some ways they can contribute to their classroom and community? Your conversations at home reinforce these important lessons and help them put respect into action.
Thank you for your continued support!
As we enter School Week 36, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on kindness through help and support. Throughout the week, students will practice showing kindness by offering compliments and encouragement, sharing with others, including everyone, advocating for those in need, and demonstrating patience.
We encourage you to ask your child how they can show kindness in their daily interactions. A simple conversation at home can reinforce these important lessons and help them become more compassionate and considerate individuals.
Thank you for your support in nurturing a culture of kindness!
As we enter School Week #35, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on safety—specifically, being in control of our bodies and objects. Students will practice using materials appropriately and walking safely throughout the school. We encourage you to ask your child how they can demonstrate safe behavior at school and discuss ways to apply these habits in different settings. Your support helps reinforce these important lessons!
Thank you for your partnership,
As we enter School Week #34, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on responsible engagement in learning. We encourage students to come prepared each day, actively participate by asking and answering questions, stay organized, and set and monitor their goals. These skills help them take ownership of their learning and growth.
Take a moment to ask your student: What does engagement in learning look like to you? This can spark a great conversation about their habits, goals, and ways to stay actively involved in their education.
Thank you for your support!
As we enter Week 33 of the school year, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on Respect through active listening. We will be encouraging students to practice whole-body and mindful listening, use an appropriate voice level, respond respectfully and appropriately, and follow adult directions.
We encourage you to ask your child, "How can you be an active listener?" This will help them reflect on their listening skills and reinforce what they are learning in school.
Thank you for your support!
As we approach Week 32 of the school year, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on kindness through empathy. We will encourage students to identify and understand what others are going through and to listen with the intent to truly understand. This is a great opportunity to have a conversation at home—ask your child what empathy looks like to them and how they can practice it in their daily interactions. Thank you for your continued support in fostering kindness and understanding!
As we enter Week 31 of the school year, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) focus will be on being safe by showing awareness. This includes honoring personal boundaries, recognizing body language—both their own and that of others—and being mindful of their environment. Encouraging awareness helps students build respect, empathy, and personal responsibility.
We invite you to engage with your child by asking them how they can show awareness at school. Their insights and reflections can reinforce these important skills in their daily interactions.
Thank you for your support!
Next week is Week 29, and our SEL focus will be responsibility—helping students learn to self-regulate, make thoughtful decisions, and follow directions as zero/one timers. We encourage you to ask your child over the weekend, "What does it mean to be responsible?" and discuss ways they can show responsibility at school and home.
Thank you for your partnership in their growth!
Next week marks Week #28, and our SEL focus will be on respect through recognizing and celebrating the unique differences of others. Students will explore how to honor diversity, embrace the principle that "All means All," practice inclusion, promote equity, and deepen their social awareness. These important lessons help us build a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
Ask your child how they can show respect by recognizing and celebrating the unique differences of others.
Thank you for your continued partnership in this meaningful work!
Next week marks Week #27 of the school year, and our SEL focus will be on kindness, specifically through the lens of being polite. We will be emphasizing the importance of using manners, practicing positive self-talk, and using appropriate school language and gestures. These simple actions help foster a respectful and supportive environment for everyone. We encourage you to ask your child what being kind looks like and how they practice politeness at school. It’s a great opportunity to continue these conversations at home and reinforce the positive behaviors we’re cultivating in the classroom.
Thank you for your support!
Next week will be Week #26, and our SEL focus will be on being safe by following adult directions. We’ll emphasize how following these directions helps keep everyone safe and builds trust in the decisions adults make. Ask your student what following adult directions means and looks like. This will help reinforce the importance of listening, staying focused, and responding to attention signals (CLAWS).
