Athletic Update: Due to a few injuries and players being unavailable, both schools are having a hard time fielding teams for today’s  HMS vs. CMS FB games. In order to provide an opportunity for both 7th and 8th to play, our format will be a little different this evening. We will play one game. Kickoff will be at 6:00. 7th grade will play the first half. 8th grade will play the second half. In order to have enough players to field a team a few players will float between the 7th and 8th grade. Football players need to be at the stadium by 5:30 to warm-up. 

Wrestling starts May 10th! Anyone can wrestle. Our program is inclusive and we welcome everyone: girls, boys, experienced wrestlers, and those who have never laced up wrestling shoes before. Wrestling is a no cut sport and we match up wrestlers based on weight and ability level. Parents, As part of Governor Inslee’s announcement on Thursday, March 11th, the number of fans attending athletic events has been expanded. These new expectations go into effect on Thursday, March 18th. Starting Thursday, March 18th, our league will allow • Four fans per player at football games • Three fans per player at volleyball games. Safety precautions stay the same. • Fans representing each player must sit together. • Social distancing of 6ft. must be practiced between each players fan group. • Masks must to be worn at all times. • Fans will register upon entry.

This Week's Tech Talk Tuesday: "Yesterday, I was about to click on the Roosevelt High School weekly newsletter when I stopped myself when it occurred to me, “Wait, why do I still open this each week given that my kids no longer go to this school?” Tessa graduated last spring, and still, I found delight in reading it. Many people work so hard to bring some important information into these newsletters every week, and I value these letters as resources provide. The recent one, for example, listed all sorts of resources to help spark key conversations. I bring this all up because those emails are a vital connection between the entire Roosevelt community, families, students, and teachers. I have a deep appreciation for the people who put these emails together. A big shift has happened, a reset is remerging, and how we communicate as schools and families is critical. What types of committees will we make? How should such emails even be changed? As family members, what is a good time to talk about how is our school email? What type of information is in your school’s newsletter? Do you find parts of it valuable? Would you like to see more of something? Power is out at both Coweeman and Kelso High. PUD is working on it and estimates power will be back on by 12:30. Students and staff are safe and secure with school going on as usual.

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

Athletic Update: Just the basics…you’ll receive a more comprehensive letter over the weekend. Please note: All paperwork must be turned in prior to attending tryouts/practice. We have been advertising a “potential” start date for approximately 5 weeks via social media, Skyward, PAWS presentations, etc. anticipating it might take some time to get in for a physical. Please know as much as we want to accommodate athletes, we are not able to allow players on the court/field without a physical on file (not even to watch) per WIAA. Athletic Update: GREAT NEWS! Our region entered Phase II yesterday afternoon. CMS will start football practice and volleyball tryouts on Thursday, February 18th. If you don’t already have your athletic paperwork in, or your sports physical complete, it is now time. Paperwork can be printed from the CMS website. Please turn it into the office ASAP. We are closed today (2/12) due to snow and Monday (2/15) for Presidents Day. Football and volleyball are open to all 7th and 8th grade students. We want as many students participating as possible. We will be competing against Huntington, Castle Rock, La Center and Woodland. We are overjoyed for our students and staff to have the opportunity to play and experience a sense of normalcy.
