After more than a year of planning, construction on the new Lexington Elementary School is beginning. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Wednesday, September 18th where the new school, which is actually the second Lexington school, will start going up.
The first Lexington school, according to the Cowlitz County Historical Museum, was probably built in the 1920’s and would have been K-8th grade. It was located where the Lexington Fire Station is now.
The community is invited to attend the public ceremony at 4:00 pm at the lot on Boardwalk where Wyatt Drive intersects. In addition to members of the district, construction company, and architecture firm, students will be in attendance to commemorate the occasion. Photo opportunities for the public will be available after the ceremonial groundbreaking.
This new Lexington school is one of the major bond projects approved by voters in February 2018, and replaces what will be a 74-year-old Catlin and a 55-year-old Beacon Hill elementary schools. Construction is expected to be completed by summer of 2021, with the new school opening in fall of 2021.
