A beautiful day to break ground at Wallace - May 23, 2019

May 22nd was a beautiful day to break ground on the new Wallace Elementary. The event was attended by community members, Wallace students and staff, district administration, and those who are helping to bring the school into being: Integrus Architecture, FORMA Construction, ESD 112 Construction Services Group, and JH Kelly.

We started with a private ceremony for students and staff, then held a public ceremony for the greater community. We heard what this new school means for the students from three third graders, who will be the first fifth grade class to in the new building. ArabellaDylan, and Drayven shared their thoughts and gratitude to the community who approved the new school with their votes. (Click their names to see the videos.)  Wallace Principal Ray Cattin, Kelso School District Superintendent Mary Beth Tack and Chief Financial Officer Scott Westlund, as well as representatives from Integrus and FORMA, also said a few words.

Among the Wallace alums at the event, was Arlott Brent Burkhart. Ms. Burkhart, a 1937 Kelso High School grad, went to the original Wallace Elementary in the 1920s for her 6th grade year.  The kindergarten class sang Happy Birthday to her for her 100th birthday, which was the day after the groundbreaking,
