How the Hilanders are like the Seahawks, Huskies and Cougars - July 9, 2018

With all the excavating going on at Schroeder Field, you may be wondering why they’re moving so much dirt to put in a synthetic turf. What does it take to lay down some artificial grass, anyway? A lot, actually. Steve over at FieldTurf put the process into three steps for us.

  1. First, you need to excavate the existing dirt (see photo)
  2. Next, install a new drainage system under eight inches of a rock base
  3. Then, install the turf with approximately 550,000 pounds of sand and rubber infill between the fibers

All this work will be worth it. When it’s done, we’ll have the same turf and infill system that the Seahawks, Huskies and Cougars play on in their stadiums.
