When Butler Acres Elementary Student Council members began talking about how they could make a difference beyond their school walls, they landed on a simple but powerful idea: take care of their neighborhood.

This year, the Student Council officially adopted the street in front of Butler Acres, committing to regular clean-ups to help beautify the community. After coordinating with the City of Kelso, these Blue Jays rolled up their sleeves for their first clean-up on January 21—using their lunch recess to get the job done.

In just 30 minutes, 12 students worked their way from the east end of Burcham Street to the Kelso Skate Park, collecting six four-gallon bags of trash. Principal Dr. Mark Connolly and Assistant Principal Sarah Dahl proudly supported the effort as students led the way.

The Student Council plans to continue cleaning their adopted street once a month during lunch recess and is also planning a weekend clean-up where families can join in.

Great work, Blue Jays, your pride in your school and community shines!
