In
the event of natural disasters and other emergencies,
Kelso School District works closely with all
appropriate agencies to ensure the safety
of students. We are kept well-informed about
the status of volcanic activity at Mt. St.
Helens through regular reports from the Cowlitz
County Sheriff's Office and Department of
Emergency Management (DEM). DEM receives
information from the U.S. Department of Geological
Services.
Kelso School District has emergency plans
for both evacuation and sheltering-in-place,
and we have procedures for student and staff
safety in the event of ash fall. In
the event of any emergency involving changes
in normal routine, we inform the media and
we attempt to call parents. In the case of
early dismissal, we transport secondary students
first. If we are unable to reach parents,
we keep elementary and middle school students
at their school.
In the event of an emergency, please listen
to local radio, call Kelso School District’s
information line, or monitor the Internet.
All media, including Portland radio and television
stations will be informed. However, our local
radio stations will have the most detailed
information.
