Advanced
8th Grade Science
Welcome
to B-4
This handout will explain some of the expectations and how the
grade is attained. The methods
of investigation a scientist works with in order to solve a problem would
be described as a process. Process
includes how a scientist thinks, collects data, and solves problems. To be successful as a scientist we will
be developing scientific process skills and concepts using chosen content
areas.
Science Course Description
Advanced 8th Grade Science
Prerequisite: teacher Permission Required
Offered: Full year
The Advanced 8th
Grade Science class focuses on integration of eighth and ninth grade Science
Essential Academic Learning Requirements. The intent is to challenge students
to explore system connections through the use of inquiry, design, technology,
and environmental issues in the areas of astronomy, chemistry, physics, and
wave theory. There will be an HIV/AID unit also taught in this class.
Expectations are high for these advanced students. This class is set at a faster pace, and
students need to be self-motivated, organized, and focused. Students are also expected to maintain
at least a ‘B’ to stay in the class. This class is
a fast track class for entrance into the four –year science program
at Kelso High School. Successful
completion of this class will allow student s to enroll in Biology as a freshman.
Grading Section Grades are as follows in my class:
A = 100-95%
A- = 94-90%
B+ = 89-85%
B = 84-80%

10% 1. Attitudes and academic thoughts - journal writing.
30% 2. Quiz/Test - may be taken over with highest score recorded.
10% 3. Portfolio - shows examples of work such as new knowledge, thinking
skills and concepts attained with rational.
40% 4. Assignments - include lab work, participation
in group, and class assignments.
10% 5. Independent study - must include scientific investigation (Scientific
Method), process skills, and concepts learned in class.
