For the fourth year, Coweeman Junior High participated in the National
Week of Concern about young people and gun violence. Each day during
the week Oct. 21-25, students where involved in a variety of activities
focusing on the prevention of gun violence.
The highlight of the week was on Oct. 24 when all student participated
in a nationwide pledge to help stop gun violence and grow up in safety.
As in years past this day has been recognized by a U.S. Senate resolution
and a Presidential Proclamation.
To kickoff the week we have asked a trauma nurse from Legacy Emanuel
Children's Hospital in Portland, Oregon, to talk about the effects of
gun violence, the importance of wearing seat belts, helmets, self respect,
and resolving conflicts peacefully.
The highlight of the past two years has been the formations we have
created on Schroeder Field. In 2001 we created a Heart, and in 2002
we made a Star.
