8th Graders: Challenge Information for 9th Grade Tech Tools Class

Dear Parent or Guardians of 8th Graders:

The Kelso School District is committed to ensuring that our students leave our school system  college, career and community ready. Today it is hard to find a profession that doesn’t require some level of computer skills, and college work absolutely requires it. In addition, the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA), the state adopted assessment,  is conducted online and requires students to utilize technology skills in order to demonstrate their learning.  It is clear that in today’s world, technology skills are no longer optional.

For these reasons we are enrolling all 9th graders in a one trimester “Tech Tools” class. In this class students will learn technology competencies utilizing Microsoft Office and Google Drive and work on developing proficient keyboarding skills. They will even have the opportunity to earn certifications in Microsoft Office 2010 tools.

If your student feels that he/she is already competent in keyboarding and technology skills, there will be an option to challenge the Tech Tools class. Your student can accomplish this by typing at least 30 words per minute in a testing environment and earning a passing score on a technology competencies test. Your student can sign up for this test by signing up with Mrs. Hatfield in A-1 to take the tests after school or during lunch. We would like this to be completed by the end of February. For special circumstances, the absolute final test date is May 31.

If you have any questions regarding this, please contact Denise Miles-Foges, high school counselor, at 501-1849.
