ANNOUNCEMENTS

Change in Parking Policy

Beginning on Monday, October 1st, 2018, parking at St. Mary’s church will not be permitted by staff and students during the school day.  The parking lot will also not be available for parent/students drop-off and pick-up before and after school.  Due to liability and insurance issues, the church is no longer able to provide their parking lot for use.  The school district will also need to lock the gate in the fence between St. Mary’s and Coweeman Middle School.  We appreciate your help in continuing to support a positive working relationship with our school neighbors.

Healthy Youth Survey

Kelso School District is participating in the Washington State 2018 Healthy Youth Survey during fall 2018.

The Healthy Youth survey includes questions related to physical activity and diet, unintentional and intentional injury, substance use, risk and protective factors, access to school-based services, and sexual behaviors, abuse and orientation. Survey results are used by schools, communities and state agencies to plan programs to support our youth and reduce their risks.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and the students’ answers are anonymous. Please read the following Parent and Student Notification Letter for more information about the Healthy Youth Survey.

Why are we focusing on attendance?

Every absence, excused or unexcused, is a learning opportunity lost and can have significant impacts on a student’s success in school and life. A student who misses 10% or more of their school days, which amounts to 18 or more days in a school year—or just two days a month—for any reason is considered chronically absent. Chronically absent students are more likely to fall behind in reading and math and less likely to graduate from high school. Addressing chronic absenteeism and developing good attendance habits is a solvable problem for which we all share responsibility.
