Dear Barnes Families:

I am happy to report that Barnes Elementary is a recipient of the 2013 Washington Achievement Award

Barnes Elementary is being recognized for High Progress and lands in the top ten percent of all Title 1 improving schools in the state of Washington. Data is generated from 2010-2013 state assessments. The honor highlights how Barnes is making the most progress in improving the performance of all students over a number of years in statewide assessments.

This is an extraordinary accomplishment and is a direct reflection of the hard work of our students, the dedication of our teachers, and the support and guidance of our parents. Barnes award is well deserved. In the past year(s), Barnes has implemented several improvements that have directly impacted our students’ success.

The Washington Achievement Awards are sponsored by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. They celebrate Washington’s top-performing schools and recognize achievement in many categories. This highly-selective award is based on our school’s performance on the Achievement Index and uses criteria set by the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver.

The Washington Achievement Award is given in six categories: overall excellence, high progress, reading, math, science, extended graduation rate (high and comprehensive schools only) and English language acquisition.

I hope you will visit the OSPI Washington Achievement awards site to learn more about the awards and the criteria for selection.

The selection process for the Washington Achievement Award is very rigorous, and all of us take great pride in this accomplishment.

Sincerely,

Kim Yore
